About Consulate General of Mexico in San Juan, Puerto Rico
Consular relations between Mexico and Puerto Rico date back to 1882 when an Honorary Vice Consulate was established on the island. As of 1898, the honorary office continued in functions, although with interruptions. In 1960 the Mexican representation was reopened as an Honorary Consulate.
In 1972, the Mexican government established a Carrera Consulate. In 1988, the level of the office was raised to Consulate General, based on the geopolitical importance of Puerto Rico in the Caribbean, the condition of its economy, and the increasingly close relations between intellectual and academic personalities.
Since then, the Mexican government has sought to emphasize the relevance it attaches to its presence on the island by appointing officials from the Mexican Foreign Service with the rank of ambassador as head.
